QTI s.r.l. is the first Italian quantum telecommunications company, providing industrial grade systems and products for quantum networks, leveraging the advanced knowledge of the co-founders in the field of atomic and quantum optics, solid-state lasers, and quantum communication and optical telecommunications both in fiber and in free-space.

A story of research and business

QTI is a young Italian start-up founded in October 2020 by a group of entrepreneurs, scientists, and researchers. The company was born as an official spin-off company of the Italian National Institute of Optics of the National Research Council (CNR-INO). QTI engineers, develops, and produces reconfigurable Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) architectures and offers fully made in Italy products and solutions, designed and developed with proprietary patented know-how and expertise taking advantage of a strategic European supply chain.

From a research oriented approach deriving from our CNR origins, we have evolved in a competitive business actor in the quantum market at national and international level.

From its foundation, QTI has been a key actor at national and international level. In August 2021, QTI supported the implementation of the intergovernmental quantum communication between three countries – Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. It was the first quantum transmission between three nodes (Trieste, Ljubljana and Rijeka) situated at a crow-fly distance of 95 and 100 km.

The partnership with Telsy

Recognizing the disruptive opportunities provided by quantum technologies, Telsy, cybersecurity and cryptography competence center of the TIM Group, has recently become one of the QTI shareholders. This association allows a fully end-to-end encryption system, compatible with current telecommunication infrastructure for private, governmental, and military applications.

During last year, QTI has consolidated its major position in the quantum market and has boosted its international and European vocation, taking part in various EU quantum-related projects and to international major events in the field. 


The combination of the work of well-known quantum experts with the efforts of young generations of scientists, researchers and developers lies at the core of QTI success and is a key component, together with the company’s cutting-edge technologies, for its leading positioning in the quantum technology market.

QKD is a physical layer method, based on the laws of nature, that allows future-proof data encryption, exhibiting a secure way of distributing cryptographic keys between distant users. Such secret keys can therefore be used by existing cypher machines to guarantee the ultimate security of digital communication.
